Google: Changing Business or a Business in Need of Change?
There’s an article over at Business Week today that talks about some of the problems Google is having dealing with investors and Wall Street. The Washington Post is running an article today that talks about the info leak from Google that discusses future plans to offer online storage to consumers so that they can backup their hard drives and then access the data from anywhere. The precise nature of the information hadn’t been disclosed …until now. It turns out that it was nothing more than an innocuous two-column list of search terms and frequency.”

Seo Tips

Seo Basic Tips

1. First of all i would like to tell you putting a keyword or key phrase will greatly enhance your chances of getting targeted traffic to your site. Insert keywords within the title tag so that search engine robots will know what your page is about. The title tag is located right at the top of your document within the head tags. Make sure that the title tag contains text which a human can relate to. The text within the title tag is what shows up in a search result. Treat it like a headline.

2. Use of more keywords that link to a specific page the better. Always use the keywords as anchor text to link to the page from different pages on your site. This is especially useful if your site contains many pages.

3. It is unwise to have keywords in the title tag which are not contained within the body of the page. Be sure that the text within the title tag is also in the body of the page. Adding the same text for your tag will tell the reader who clicks on your page from a search engine result that they have clicked on the correct link and have arrived at the page where they intended to visit. Robots like this too because now there is a relation between the title of your page and the headline.

The most important keywords can be bolded or colored in red. A good place to do this is once or twice in the body at the top of your article and in the sub-headings.

4. Don’t use the same title tag on every page on your website. Search engine robots might determine that all your pages are the same if all your title tags are the same. If this happens, your pages might not get indexed.

5. Do not spam the description or meta tag by putting more & more meaningless keywords or even spend too much time on this tag. SEO pros all agree that these tags are not as important today as they once were.

6. Do not link to unfriendly search engines.

7. Search engines like to index human friendly pages which contain content which is relevant to the search. Don’t use doorway pages. Doorway pages are designed for robots only, not humans.

9. Describe your images with the use of the alt tag. This will help search engines that index images to find your pages and will also help readers who use text only web browsers.

10. Submit to the search engines yourself. Do not use a submission service or submission software. Doing so could get your site banned.

Customize Your Search Pages With Google Search Wiki – A Compete Guide

January 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Last year in November Google Labs was experimenting. This was new experiment that was able to give you authority to personalize your search results according to your preference, as you need to set the order of the results you can get that order.google_serach_wiki

What you will search the results will appear with two buttons, “like
it” and “don’t like it”. The “Like It” button move the site and search
results upwards and the “don’t like it” button removes the search
result, but only for the current query. There’s also an option to add
new pages that don’t appear in the list of search results: “at the
bottom of the search results you can give the address of a page that’s
relevant to your search. When you search for these same keyword(s) the
page you’ve suggested will appear at the top with this orange marker.”

“No discussion of Google’s ranking would be complete without asking the
common – but misguided! – question: “Does Google manually edit its
results?” Let me just answer that with our third philosophy: no manual
intervention. In our view, the web is built by people. You are the ones
creating pages and linking to pages. We are using all this human
contribution through our algorithms. The final ordering of the results
is decided by our algorithms using the contributions of the greater
Internet community, not manually by us. We believe that the subjective
judgment of any individual is, well … subjective, and information
distilled by our algorithms from the vast amount of human knowledge
encoded in the web pages and their links is better than individual
subjectivity.”

You can see more screen shots and detailed review on Justin Hileman’s blog.
Where Justin was saying that, you can search anyone’s edits and there
appears a search edit lists for each user. “This whole thing looks like
an experiment into crowdsourced search results.”

You can promote the results of any search query by voting the site,
you may add new web pages in the specific query results and also post
comment or review for the results with reading the others’ comments.
It’s not clear whether user votes influence the overall ranking
algorithm, but it’s likely that this is not the case.

You should understand the working of the Google search wiki. On the SearchEngineLand Matt McGee is explained that how it works with the appropriate screenshots and examples.

Its working is simple as explained on the SearchEngineLand in the Google SearchWiki 101: An Illustrated Guide

Congress must act boldly and now on economy:Obama

January 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Headline : WASHINGTON President-elect Barack Obama implored Congress on Thursday to “act boldly and act now” to fix an economy growing perilously weaker. Democratic and Republican lawmakers complained about his tax policies, letting Obama know they intend to place their own stamp on the economic recovery effort.

Leading lawmakers set an informal goal of mid-February for enacting tax cuts and government spending that could cost as much as $1 trillion.

A call for a $3,000 tax break for job creation drew particular criticism in a private meeting, and numerous lawmakers said Obama had not ticketed enough of his tax proposal for energy projects. The second-guessing game from the left and the right: While some Democrats said the incoming administration’s proposed tax cuts were too small, Republicans warned against excessive new spending.

But there was little or no dispute about the need for action, and Obama’s remarks coincided with a pair of government reports showing fresh weakness in an economy already in crisis. An updated reading on unemployment was expected to bring even more bad news on Friday.

“If nothing is done, this recession could linger for years,” with unemployment reaching double digits, Obama said in a speech at George Mason University in suburban Virginia. “A bad situation could become dramatically worse.”

Less than two weeks from taking office as the 44th president, Obama has become increasingly vocal in recent days about the need for steps to revitalize the economy, even though he has continued to defer to President George W. Bush on matters of foreign policy.

Obama’s aides and congressional Democrats have worked for weeks on legislation to create jobs, help the unemployed, cut taxes and aid cash-strapped states. Obama sent his chief political strategist, David Axelrod, and incoming chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, as well as other aides to the Capitol for a series of meetings with lawmakers.

The measure probably will include a bewildering array of provisions — from subsidies to help the newly unemployed afford their health care to a massive new effort to improve the energy efficiency of federal buildings.

Obama said this week he hoped to be able to sign legislation by early to mid-February. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., promised lawmakers she would cancel next month’s planned Presidents’ Day vacation if necessary.

“We are not going home without an economic recovery package,” she said at a news conference. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, at a difference appearance, agreed that allowed enough time to get the job done.

“But we … don’t want to make big mistakes that exacerbate the — the problem we already have, which is a dramatic, eye-popping deficit,” he added.

Lawmakers in both parties were digging into the details — few of which have been made public — and not always liking what they saw.

Democrats emerging from a private meeting of the Senate Finance Committee had little positive to say about Obama’s tax cut proposals. Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., was critical of a proposed tax break for workers and their families.

“Twenty bucks a week. How much of a lift is that going to give?” he said. Nor did he sound positive about a proposed tax break for businesses to create jobs. “If I’m a business person, it’s unlikely if you give me a several thousand dollar credit that I’m going to hire people if I can’t sell the products they’re producing,” he said.

Conrad and others said Obama’s blueprint included about $10 billion in tax incentives related to energy, out of about $300 billion overall — a slice they said was too small.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., added, “Just giving people $500 or $600, while certainly welcome when there is all this economic hurt, may not be the best stimulus.” He cited evidence that taxpayers used money from the last economic stimulus measure to pay down their debt, rather than make new purchases.

Republicans noted forecasts of a record $1.2 trillion deficit for the current year and said too much additional spending could be harmful. “We can’t buy prosperity with more and more government spending,” said Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, the House Republican leader.

In his speech, Obama said more bad news was just ahead. He predicted that on Friday, “We are likely to learn that we lost more jobs last year than at any time since World War II.”

There were two government reports released within hours of his speech, both showing more weakness in the economy.

One said consumer borrowing — credit card use and items such as new auto loans — plunged by $7.94 billion in November, a record amount in dollar terms.

A second said more men and women were drawing jobless benefits last week than at any time since the 1982 recession. Joblessness was 6.7 percent in the government’s most recent report before Friday’s new figures.

In his speech, Obama said there was plenty of blame to go around for the current economic situation. He cited “an era of profound irresponsibility that stretched from corporate boardrooms to the halls of power in Washington, D.C.”

Yet he also projected an air of confidence about the future.

“We can restore opportunity and prosperity. We should never forget that our workers are still more productive than any on Earth,” he said. “Our universities are still the envy of the world.”

Pelosi, at her news conference, outlined a schedule for the House to follow. It envisioned committee action in the next few weeks, followed by a vote in the full House after Obama’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada has also talked of getting legislation to the White House by early February.

Chairman Resigns After Falsifying Accounting : Satyam

January 8, 2009 · Comments Off

News of the Day——–Here is the shocking news for all of us. Satyam Computer Services Ltd. Chairman Ramalinga Raju resigned after saying he falsified earnings and assets, prompting a collapse in the stock of India’s fourth-largest software-services provider.

Raju unsuccessfully tried to sell two companies to Satyam last month in a final attempt to plug 50.4 billion rupees ($1.03 billion) of “fictitious” cash on the company’s balance sheet, he wrote in a letter to Hyderabad-based Satyam’s board today. Profits have been inflated for “several years,” he said.

Satyam, which means “truth” in Sanskrit, slumped a record 78 percent in Mumbai trading, dragging down India’s benchmark index, in a scandal that was described as “horrifying” by markets regulator C.B. Bhave. Raju’s reign unraveled in the past month as shareholders blocked the asset purchases, a World Bank ban kept Satyam from bidding for orders and four directors quit.

“This is a black day for India, the software sector and corporate-governance claims,” Arun Kejriwal, founder of Kejriwal Research & Investment Services, said in Mumbai. “If at all there’s an event that could be the biggest setback for corporate India, it is this.”

Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Citigroup Inc., HSBC Holdings Plc, and Credit Suisse Group AG suspended coverage of Satyam. The National Stock Exchange removed Satyam from its main Nifty index after the benchmark slumped 6.2 percent.

Satyam’s American depositary receipts fell $8.42, or 90 percent, to 93 cents in trading before the opening of the New York Stock Exchange. The shares were then halted by the exchange, which said it is evaluating the news.

Deep Shock

“We’re in a deep state of shock by what’s been announced and we’re fairly happy that we sold when we did,” said Greg Kuhnert, a fund manager at Investec Asset Management Ltd. in London, which manages about $10 billion and sold its 0.15 percent stake in Satyam last month. “When we look at further investments in the country, we’ll have to get out a magnifying glass and really examine every bit very closely.”

Satyam maintains computer networks and provides outsourcing services for clients such as Citigroup, Nissan Motor Co. and Qantas Airways Ltd. The company employs about 53,000 people in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad, and competes with Infosys Technologies Ltd., Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. and Wipro Ltd.

“This quarter will be tumultuous for us,” interim Chief Executive Officer Ram Mynampati said in an e-mailed statement. “Rumors will abound and it would be fair to assume that competition will try to leverage it to their advantage.”

Infosys, India’s second-largest software exporter, called the incident “deplorable.”

Nonexistent Cash

Of Satyam’s reported cash and bank balances of 53.61 billion rupees on Sept. 30, 50.4 billion rupees was nonexistent, Raju said in the letter sent to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Satyam’s operating margin in the quarter ended Sept. 30 was 3 percent of revenue, instead of the reported 24 percent, Raju said. The company had sales of 21 billion rupees, 22 percent less than the stated figure of 27 billion rupees.

Raju arranged 12.3 billion rupees “to keep operations going” at Satyam during the past two years by pledging the founders’ shares and raising funds from other sources, he said.

“What started as a marginal gap between actual operating profit and the one reflected in the books of accounts continued to grow over the years,” Raju said. “It was like riding a tiger, not knowing how to get off without being eaten.”

Brother Quits

Rama Raju, the outgoing chairman’s younger brother and Satyam’s managing director, also resigned, the company said.

The founders’ concern was that poor performance, combined with the fact that they held a small stake in the company, would make Satyam an easy target for a takeover, exposing the inflated figures, he said.

Raju’s attempts to “keep the wheel moving” at Satyam was finally derailed as lenders sold most of the pledged shares because of margin calls, he said.

Satyam’s auditor PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC is examining the statement made by Raju and declined to comment further, the firm said in an e-mail, citing client confidentiality.

Prem Chand Gupta, minister for company affairs, said the government is investigating the incident. “There will be no leniency in dealing with this case,” he said in New Delhi.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India ordered a probe into trading in Satyam shares, the agency said on its Web site. Bombay Stock Exchange spokesman Kalyan Bose said the bourse will examine whether to remove Satyam from the Sensitive Index.

Maytas, World Bank

John Heine, a spokesman for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, said he wasn’t authorized to confirm or deny whether the agency was investigating Satyam.

Raju scrapped the planned acquisition of Maytas Properties Ltd. and Maytas Infra Ltd. last month, less than 12 hours after announcing it, following a drop in the company’s ADRs.

Separately, the World Bank declared on Dec. 23 that the company was ineligible for contracts for eight years starting in September, alleging that improper benefits were given to the bank’s employees.

DSP Merrill Lynch Ltd. said it ended its contract with Satyam yesterday. The software provider had on Dec. 27 named Merrill as an adviser for helping it on strategic “options,” including a possible stake sale.

Vianale & Vianale, a law firm in Boca Raton, Florida, said today that it filed a class action lawsuit against Satyam and its top executives. Satyam spokesman Jim Swords declined to comment.

Raju, who won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2007, has an MBA from Ohio University and is an alumnus of Harvard Business School, according to Satyam’s Web site.

In September, Satyam was awarded the Golden Peacock Global Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance by the London-based World Council for Corporate Governance. The council today withdrew the award.

“This company had a five-star independent board and it had a leading auditor and still it managed the con,” said Tarun Sisodia, a Mumbai-based analyst with Anand Rathi Securities Ltd. “So the question is, why only Satyam, why not every other company?”

How to Improve Your Search Engine Ranking on Google

December 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Importance of Page rank is that: Google’s measure how important a web page is. PR(Page Rank) system is based on the back links. Greater the number of back links is equal to greater PR of that site. Also if a webpage has good quality links from some websites it can gain high page rank very quickly. Initially Google’s search engine results were highly dependent on the page rank of the site but these days search engines are smart enough. They don’t rely on the page rank completely but it can help you in gaining slightly better rankings.

In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages. For more information about improving your site’s visibility in the Google search results, we recommend reviewing our blog.

google_page_rank_explained

PageRank is a secret algorithm which Google defines as: “…PageRank continues to provide the basis for all of our web search tools.

Google also states: “Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don’t match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page’s content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it’s a good match for your query.

In a General way of talking a Weblog is a Web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events,or other material such as graphics or video. It’s an online journal comprised of links and postings in reverse chronological order, meaning the most recent posting appears at the top of the page.the blogging software company acquired by Google in February 2003, has noted, weblogs are “post-centric” — the posting is the key unit — rather than “page-centric,” as with more traditional websites. Weblogs typically link to other websites and blog postings, and many allow readers to comment on the original post, thereby allowing audience discussions.
